Mail-in Ballots Will Likely be Stolen in the Upcoming Election

Election integrity is at risk as mail is being stolen from USPS collection boxes. As November approaches, mail-in ballots are likely to be stolen.

Across the nation, a troubling trend is emerging, one that could undermine the integrity of our electoral process as we approach a critical election season. In Michigan, a recent incident highlights a disastrous issue: the theft of mail, including absentee ballots, from USPS mailboxes. Last month, Amber Nicole Sperbeck, 26, and Michael James Craig, 42, were charged with stealing mail from multiple locations in Delta Township. Among the stolen items was at least one absentee ballot.

This isn’t an isolated incident. Reports are surfacing from various parts of the country about criminals using keys—either illicitly obtained from USPS sources or replicated by nefarious means—to access and pilfer mail from USPS collection boxes. This raises significant concerns not only about personal and financial security but also about the security of mail-in voting.

The implications of these thefts are profound, especially as millions of Americans rely on mail-in ballots to exercise their voting rights. The sanctity of our elections hinges on the reliability and security of the voting process, including the safe and accurate delivery of mail-in ballots. When ballots can be so easily diverted, lost, or stolen, it puts the entire democratic process at risk. And who can guarantee that some won’t exploit these weaknesses for their own advantage? As November approaches, we must recognize that numerous actors are poised to disrupt our electoral process.

If You Can, Skip Mail-in Ballots and Vote in Person

As we move closer to the elections, it’s imperative for voters to consider the safest method to cast their votes. While mail-in voting is indispensable for many, these recent incidents serve as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities in the system. If possible, voting in person provides the most secure method of ensuring your vote is counted exactly as cast.

For those who must vote by mail, it’s more important than ever to monitor ballot status through tracking systems and to report any irregularities immediately. Election integrity is not merely an ideal; it’s the cornerstone of our democracy, and every voter plays a role in safeguarding it against the threats of fraud and theft.

The rise in mail theft, especially of such a sensitive nature, is a clarion call to all stakeholders—government agencies, election officials, and the voting public—to fortify the mechanisms of our electoral process. We must act decisively to protect not only our personal information but the very foundation of our democratic participation. If you have the ability to vote in person this November, please do. Your ballot’s journey should not be left to chance.
