GOP Unveils Subpoenas in Hunter Biden Art Sales Investigation

Republicans escalate scrutiny, issuing subpoenas in the ongoing probe into Hunter Biden's art sales and family business dealings.

In the latest development of the ongoing investigation into the Biden family’s international business dealings, House Republicans, led by Committee Chairman James Comer, have issued subpoenas to key figures associated with Hunter Biden. The focus of the inquiry revolves around the high-priced sales of Hunter’s artwork.

The subpoenas target Hunter’s business associates, Eric Schwerin and Mervyn Yan, along with art dealer George Bergès and art patron Elizabeth Naftali. Bergès, who has not responded to previous interview requests, is now compelled to appear before lawmakers on December 15. The committee seeks to understand the specifics of the art sales, especially any attempts to conceal the origin of funds received by Hunter and other Biden family members from overseas.

Elizabeth Naftali, a significant Democrat donor who purchased one of Hunter Biden’s pricey artworks, has also been summoned to testify before lawmakers on December 1. Her recent appointment by President Joe Biden to the Commission for the Preservation of America’s Heritage Abroad adds a layer of concern for the investigating committee.

In a letter to Naftali’s lawyer, Comer and Rep. Jim Jordan expressed their apprehensions about her “anonymity regarding her purchase of Hunter Biden’s art” and the potential conflicts arising from her prestigious position within the Biden Administration.

Business associates Yan and Schwerin, both connected to Hunter, have been called to appear before lawmakers in December. Comer and Jordan highlighted Schwerin’s close collaboration with the Biden family and entities identified as transferring millions of dollars to them, often from foreign sources.

Last week, Comer issued subpoenas to Hunter Biden, President Biden’s brother James Biden, and Rob Walker, a former Biden family business associate. The subpoenas, made public through the Oversight Committee’s official account, outline deposition demands at various dates spanning from the end of this month to mid-December.

Furthermore, Comer has extended the inquiry to include transcribed interviews with additional Biden family members and associates. This list includes President Biden’s daughter-in-law Hallie Biden, her sister Elizabeth Secundy, Hunter Biden’s wife Melissa Cohen, and Hunter Biden’s former business partner Tony Bobulinski.

As Republicans intensify their scrutiny into the Biden family’s financial dealings, these subpoenas mark a crucial step in unraveling the complexities surrounding Hunter Biden’s art sales and the broader issues of financial transparency within the Biden clan. The hearings, scheduled for the coming weeks, are poised to shed light on the intricate web of relationships and transactions under examination by the House Oversight Committee.
