Democrat Governor Gretchen Whitmer Advocates For Abortion Up To Birth

Gretchen Whitmer's push for late-term abortions and funding raises concerns and opposition from pro-life advocates and a fellow Democrat.

Gretchen Whitmer, the Democrat Governor of Michigan, is once again making headlines as one of the most pro-abortion governors in the United States. In a recent meeting, she pushed for a package of bills that would eliminate all pro-life laws on the books and allow for abortions up to the moment of birth. Whitmer’s extreme stance on this issue is drawing heavy criticism from pro-life advocates, as well as a Democrat who believe it goes too far.

The proposed package of bills is facing strong opposition, and it has even stalled in the Democrat-run Michigan House as supporters struggle to gather enough votes for its passage. One Democrat legislator, Representative Karen Whitsett, the vice-chair of the House Health Policy Committee, has expressed her concerns about the bills. In a Facebook post, she stated her opposition to allowing taxpayer money to fund elective abortions, emphasizing that those funds should be used to support struggling seniors living in poverty. She also raised concerns about the potential unintended health and safety consequences of the legislation falling disproportionately on Black women.

Whitsett’s opposition to the bill package is a significant obstacle in the Michigan House. Democrats only hold a two-seat advantage and need the support of all 56 of their members to pass bills without Republican backing. It remains unclear how discussions are progressing to win over holdouts in the Legislature.

Governor Whitmer’s stance on the package of bills is deeply concerning for many who believe in the sanctity of life. She is advocating for a radical approach to abortion, with no restrictions or safeguards in place. This approach could easily lead to the termination of pregnancies up until the very moment of birth, which is a highly controversial and morally fraught position.

Pro-life advocates argue that it is not too much to ask for a brief 24-hour waiting period before making such a life-altering decision. This waiting period allows individuals to carefully consider their choices and ensures that they are certain about their decision to terminate a pregnancy. Whitmer’s unwillingness to support even this modest safeguard has left many deeply troubled.

Overall, Governor Whitmer’s extreme pro-abortion stance and her disregard for the concerns of her constituents are alarming. The package of bills she is pushing for, which would eliminate all pro-life laws and allow abortions up to birth, is a deeply polarizing and controversial proposal. It remains to be seen whether this extreme legislation will prevail in Michigan, but it is clear that it faces significant opposition from both pro-life advocates and some members of Whitmer’s own party.
