Chicago Teachers Union Demands $50 Billion for Woke Agenda

The Chicago Teachers Union's extravagant demands will only burden taxpayers and further indoctrinate children, not improve education.

The Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) has set the stage for another contentious season of contract negotiations with a staggering $50 billion demand list that will burden taxpayers without yielding educational benefits for students. In an environment where Chicago Public Schools already struggle with subpar outcomes—spending over $21,000 per student for only 21% reading proficiency among eighth graders—the union’s focus seems misguided at best.

Far from prioritizing academic improvement, the CTU’s demands obviously cater to a woke agenda, with mandates for sex-neutral restrooms and compulsory LGBTQ+ training for counselors. Alarmingly, the union also insists on policies that could further obstruct parental rights, such as prohibiting union members from informing parents if a student rejects their biological sex. These demands reflect a troubling shift from educational priorities to social engineering.

Adding to the concern, the CTU’s vision includes transforming unused school properties into migrant housing, coupled with a bizarre requirement that each school appoint a “newcomer liaison,” clearly a tactic to swell union membership rather than address educational needs. They are also pushing for “police-free schools,” extravagant raises, and more lax evaluations.

The CTU Is a Case Study in Woke Teachers Unions

It is particularly disconcerting that the CTU’s influence extends into the mayor’s office, with Mayor Brandon Johnson’s prior affiliations with the union likely to color his administration’s responses to these demands. The possibility of a strike looms large, showcasing the union’s readiness to disrupt education if their demands are not met.

This situation should serve as a cautionary tale for cities across America. It illustrates how teacher unions often undermine the educational system and push agendas that do more to advance their power than educate our children. If anyone believes that these demands will improve the educational environment, they are sorely mistaken. These demands are a recipe for schools to pay teachers more for less work while aggressively promoting a woke agenda that offers no real benefit to the students.

Chicago desperately needs a wake-up call and a shift towards conservative leadership to correct many years of mismanagement. The future of our children is at stake—it’s a reminder of the need for vigilance and accountability, ensuring that educational policies prioritize student outcomes and genuine teacher excellence over union overreach. This isn’t just about Chicago; it’s a nationwide alarm sounding for a return to common sense in our schools.
