‘This Man Is Destroying California:’ Gavin Newsom’s Minimum Wage Spike

Gavin Newsom is transforming California into a place where the working class struggles to afford McDonald’s.

“Gavin Newsom, I hope America is watching. I hope he never becomes President. This man is destroying California.”

Angela Marsden, a Los Angeles restaurant owner

Angela Marsden, a restaurant owner from Los Angeles, is sounding the alarm over California’s food industry minimum wage hike. Surviving COVID was a Herculean task for mom-and-pop establishments, only to be sucker-punched by Governor Gavin Newson who is piling on more financial burdens. Marsden predicts a grim future: layoffs galore and skyrocketing meal prices.

Flipping burgers at a fast-food joint could fetch you $20 an hour, thanks to Governor Gavin Newsom’s legislation aimed at restaurants boasting over 60 locations nationwide. This contrasts sharply with the state’s already lofty $15.50 hourly wage for other sectors. Marsden reveals the dire consequences firsthand, noting a friend poised to shut down four of their seven McDonald’s franchises to stem the bleed from ballooning payroll expenses.

The fallout isn’t limited to layoffs; it heralds exorbitant dining costs, putting even a basic meal out of reach for many Californians. California is rapidly transforming into a state where only the wealthy can afford the luxury of dining out, where small businesses are an endangered species, and where the American Dream goes to die. This is a cautionary tale for the entire nation about the perils of progressive policies gone awry.

The broader implications are chilling. As prices soar and jobs vanish, it’s the average Californian who suffers. Newsom’s vision for California—a playground for the elite, where the working class struggles to afford even a meal at McDonald’s—is a stark departure from the state’s once-celebrated diversity and vibrancy. California’s future looks less like a golden paradise and more like a dystopia with governance detached from the realities of everyday people.

As Marsden courageously takes a stand against Newsom’s ruinous policies, it serves as a wake-up call: unless we begin to hold our elected officials to account for the socio-economic devastation they’re causing, it won’t just be our bank accounts that suffer. Our very way of life is at stake, eroding under the weight of decisions made by those who seem more interested in ideological victories than the well-being of the people they serve.
