National Poll Reveals 66% of Americans Favor Restrictions on Abortion

A Marist University poll finds two-thirds of Americans support placing legal limits on abortion, with 83% endorsing pregnancy resource centers.

In a significant indication of shifting attitudes, a new national Marist University poll has revealed that two-thirds of Americans now support pro-life laws that impose restrictions on abortions. The 2024 Knights of Columbus-Marist Poll, released just recently, brings to light that a substantial 66% of the population is in favor of legal limits on abortion, with an impressive near-60% endorsing restrictions after the first trimester of pregnancy.

What’s particularly noteworthy in this survey is the robust backing for pregnancy resource centers – facilities dedicated to supporting mothers both during and post-pregnancy – with an overwhelming 83% approval rating among Americans. This endorsement underscores a growing acknowledgment of the importance of comprehensive support systems for expectant and new mothers.

Another critical aspect revealed by the poll is the public’s stance on healthcare professionals with religious objections to performing abortions. A significant two-thirds majority believe that these individuals should not be legally bound to perform such procedures, respecting the intersection of personal beliefs and professional duties.

Furthermore, an impressive 86% of respondents hold the view that it’s possible to craft laws that simultaneously safeguard the interests of both the mother and her unborn child. This finding suggests a nuanced understanding among the public, recognizing the complexity of the abortion debate and the need for balanced legal frameworks.

Dr. Barbara L. Carvalho, the Director of the Marist Poll, highlighted that the consistent trend of favoring significant abortion limits, with exceptions for rape, incest, or to save the life of the mother, has persisted nearly two years following the Supreme Court’s landmark Dobbs decision. This trend indicates a steady, ongoing shift in public opinion on this deeply divisive issue.

Knights of Columbus Supreme Knight Patrick Kelly, reflecting on the poll’s findings, emphasized the organization’s commitment to supporting mothers and children in need. He proudly shared that the Knights have raised over $7 million to aid pregnancy resource centers and funded more than 1,790 ultrasounds, potentially impacting around 1.5 million mothers. Kelly reaffirmed the Knights’ continued dedication to their mission of making abortion a relic of the past.

Conducted from January 8th to 9th, 2024, this Marist Poll, in collaboration with the Knights of Columbus, interviewed 1,371 adults in English or Spanish. The methodology ensured proportional representation from each region, employing both phone and online surveys.

These findings represent a crucial barometer of public opinion, highlighting a significant tilt towards more restrictive abortion policies and support for resources aiding mothers and unborn children. As the political and social landscape continues to evolve, these insights offer valuable guidance for policymakers and pro-life activists alike.
